“Mean Girls” fans are buzzing after actors Lindsay Lohan, Amanda Seyfried Lacy Chabert and surprise guests came back together for the first time in 19 years… but it was not the reunion people were expecting. The multi-billion-dollar store, Walmart, brought a nostalgic feeling to viewers through their two-minute “Black Friday” advertisement.
The advertisement featured many references to the original movie which excited many fans. The commercial portrayed the main characters as if the storyline from the movie kept going. Some of the characters even had children who attended North Shore High school, which is the same high school the Mean Girls attended in 2004.
What people are saying
After the commercial was released last week, people took to Twitter to express their excitement and also slight disappoint. Fans questioned, “Why didn’t they make another Mean Girls movie instead?”
In response to the advertisement launch, Seyfried commented on the decision to make the reunion a Walmart commercial. Seyfried decided to keep it neutral while also acknowledging their short form approach.
Where was Regina George?
While fans were excited to see a Mean Girls reunion, it definitely did not go without notice that queen mean girl, Rachel McAdams, was not included in the Walmart commercial. To which, McAdams responded, she was busy.
Looking at the commercial from a PR lens
From a PR perspective, I think Walmart did a great job at teasing Mean Girl fans with a small reunion. While it may be frustrating for fans who would love a full movie reboot, Walmart’s PR team was able to encourage conversation about the commercial on social media. And who knows, maybe this commercial will lead to something bigger in the coming months.
